Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Chapel

Erected in 1887, the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Chapel stands as a powerful tribute to Marion County’s military history. Inside the original oak doors are the names of more than 2,800 local men who served in the American Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the American Civil War. The memorial honors all who served—including both Union and Confederate soldiers—as well as white servicemen and people of color.
The chapel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. While services were once held inside for veterans and others placed in the chapel’s crypts, the building is currently closed as plans move forward to restore the historic structure for future tours and visitor access.
Outside the chapel, Civil War cannons stand on display, while bells ring hymns across the cemetery several times each day in remembrance of those who served.
